Join us for Yonnhe’ón:we – A Celebration of Indigenous Arts on November 9th, 2023
Yonnhe’ón:we, a series celebrating Indigenous Arts is launching on November 9th, at the Simcoe Street Theatre in Collingwood. This event is the first of a year-long series that honours the life-giving spirit of storytelling.
Hosted by Collingwood Poet Laureate Jillian Morris, Yonnhe’ón:we promises to be an evening of immersive storytelling through the mediums of poetry, film, and contemporary dance.
The evening will begin with a gallery reception at 6pm, showcasing a collection of paintings by Indigenous artists curated by Shorelane Arts. Be sure to arrive by 7pm for a traditional opening by Elder Jeff Monague, of Beausoleil First Nation followed by a poetry performance by Jillian Morris. Following this will be a screening of “Blood and Water,” a short film produced and narrated by Layla Staats, artist and activist from Six Nations of the Grand River who will also join for a virtual conversation following the film.
The evening will conclude with a breathtaking excerpt from the award-winning production Miigis: Underwater Panther by Red Sky Performance, choreographed by Sandra Laronde. These contemporary dancers artfully blend dance, theatre, music, and film to reveal the power of nature.
Yonnhe’ón:we, is a Kanien’kéha word which translates to “ever-giving life”, and celebrates the life-giving and life-promoting nature of stories. Stories have been interwoven into the fabric of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis culture, connecting generations and sharing history, culture, and spiritual beliefs.
Be sure to secure yours early, as this promises to be an unforgettable evening.
